The effect of the spread of English

Masayuki Sato

“English is an international language”. So many people use English in the world. It is said that there are more than 80 countries where English is used publicly and about 380,000,000 people speak English as a mother tongue. Surprisingly, about 600,000,000 people use English all over the world now.
The spread of English is good for human beings. For example, when we meet some foreign country’s people, the biggest problem is the difference of language, I think. If we can’t understand the language someone speaks, we can’t communicate well and also can’t express our ideas. If English spreads all over the world and all people are able to get to use English, we will not be in trouble with languages. It is good for not only meeting foreigners but also for business such as dealing, trade or contracts etc.
On the other hand, the spread of English has some negative points. An example of this is that by speaking English our nationality or culture gradually fades away, I think. This is just my idea but I believe it is so, because the chances we speak our own languages decrease as we are unified in our use of English as a common language.
the spread of English affects our life in both good and bad ways. Now is a time of globalization so it is important for us to study English. We must live under the situation where “we study English for globalization”  “but we shouldn’t forget our nationality.”

  1. globalization, in other words westernization or americanization has already spread into all over the world. some lost their culture.
however there is no doubt that english is very useful to communicate with people from other countries, even from not english speak countries. its really nice when we think it as a international tool.
also thats a reason why we are here now.

  3. English has become the most spoken languge in the world, and, as a result, learning it has turned into something vital for almost everyone who aspires to succeed internationally.
Although we are here, trying to learn the language, it is even more important not to forget where our roots are. And with this I'm referring to tha fact that every culture in the world has had or has a major role in the history of humanity, and definitely, it is in our hands to help our culture to spread or to reduce its influence.

We shouldn't lose our culture but many things changed to like American or European style. On the other hand, some culture remain so we should protect this and may accept other culture.

It is true that to learn English is important for all countries nowadays. It is very difficult to learn English and not to forget our own language at the same time, I think. But if we follow this globalization, we must do that.

  5. Good Text. English has been used like the universal language, and for me there two main reason, first like Kasuki said the Americanization, and the second (its not my opinion, I heard it in an article about the use of English in scientific articles) and because English is easy to learn.

English is easy to learn!! For Japanese, it is very difficult to learn English because Japanese and English are quite different languages!!
But recently the surroundings to study English are better than before so the chance to do increase.

  7. True, having one language that could be understandable around the world is really something useful, so someone won't have any complications in communicating with others outside his homeland. But why did the English language concur the world, I think that history has the answer and nowadays the western economical status and development has a strong effect on the world's societies.
