What is success?

Kazuki Suetake

There are a large number of people who are generally considered as successful in many kinds of fields such as sports, entertainment and business. However, how were they defined as successful? There are as many numbers of definitions of success as the number of people. Although I fully understand how meaningless discussing this is, please let me tell you about my definition of success this time.

Firstly, for me to acquire success, it is very necessary to earn a lot of money. When I talk about success, money is inseparable with it. I strongly believe that money makes us happier than being poor. Admittedly money very often makes people become different from before and almost always brings unhappiness to people who get too much money. Yet in my personal opinion it’s infinitely better to be in money rather than to be in debt, if you face unhappiness.

Secondly, this element has something to do with what I said above and it is respect for a job. Even if you earn a lot of money, of course you cannot have respect from people if your work involves breaking the law. Rather, it’s quite clear that they will loathe you. If you don’t have a revered and admirable job, for example being a doctor, a professional sports player or an office worker in a huge famous company, people are highly unlikely to despise you even if you earn more than them. I don’t think that is success.

Finally, you need to be enviable. Some people say that success is inside you. Being based on this opinion, if you feel satisfaction with your achievements or status, you can call it success. It seems to be wildly inaccurate to me. What I call success is definitely outside us. What they call success is merely self-satisfaction and in my view success can be visible only by people apart from you. Sometimes we need to be vain. For me gaining admiration or even envy is essential to be successful.

      Do you agree?

  1. You may have a point, but I would like to say that earning a lot of money and having a respectable job were never the ways to succeed, in fact they are the success in life. For example, a person who owns several companies and has a huge amount of money, this person has already achieved success in life and now he is enjoying his success.
Also, a doctor or a professional employer are already living their success, because they tried so hard at the beginning of their lives claiming the steps of success one after another until they've reached the level of success and great satisfaction.
Finally, to be successful in life, first you should imagine yourself after 20 years from now what well you become? Then find a way to do so and start gradually till you reach the top. ( There is a saying "Grapes should be eaten one by one" ).

  3. Kazuki, most of your ideas are, unfortunately, quite right, although there are some which need polishing.
First of all, from my perspective, there are to kinds of success, personal success and public success.
The first one consists of fulfilling one's aims in life, while the second one is not more than to reach something that people around us consider valuable or, said with different words, something enviable, something than most people want. This is why we often link success with things such as money, fame or possessions. But, what about if you merely want to be a doctor, a lorry driver, or you just want to work in a supermarket? Will you need money to become "personally" successful, or you will only need to achieve your target?
Nowadays we can see heaps of people who are considered successful, but sometimes, these "icons" are anything but happy in their lives because they have never accomplished their real purposes. So, again, it is not being successful to someone else's eyes what matters, but being happy with what one does. And here you can see that, at the end, happiness is always our final goal.

  4. Hi, Kazuki

Thanks for your writing. Your writing style is realy good and thanks to that, I can easier understand your opinion reagarding success.

But I'm really curious to know what you want to be in the future? or what you do? In my opinion, money is very important but it's not success. it's just one of means to fulfill or reach your own goal. Following your idea, I think, we can't start to run business with considerable debt.

Each person has each own ambition in life, even though it seems meaningfulness for ohter people. When it comes true, we can call it "success." Always, it is in person's heart, I mean, inside of you!!
